Our society wants instant gratification with everything. The faster we go, the more we want it to move faster. Give us ‘quick’ or ‘instant’, and we want ‘ready-made’.
Some ‘pre-fab’ things work well and there is a real benefit saving time and money buying something that is all put together for you. It depends on the context. For a business there are things that may be too complicated for most. That alone is a good reason to find tools that can give us a head-start such as the Internet’s infamous ‘Business in a Box’.
If learning a programming language was required, well we just wouldn’t or we would believe we couldn’t. Too far out (technical)? This would prevent us from having a website or starting a business online in many cases. At least it would be the case if we had to take a time out for a few years to learn the language and get some hands-on experience. This would be more likely if the business was to be technical. If you just want to market opportunities and products online you really don’t need that level of skill at all.
People are not necessarily lazy. More so, it is usually just that some people can relate to technical things and some don’t. There is nothing wrong with that. We are all different. It is just that we should know our limitations as well as we know our likes and dislikes. If you are building your own business this is the time to make it what you enjoy and could do well.
There are several resources we could use to accomplish what we need. There are web design companies to create a website and some web pages for us, but this can be expensive or cheesy looking. Don’t be fooled by ‘really free’ website built ads on TV that are laughable. They make that point “really free not funny free”. Yes, really free to build it.
However don’t forget to mention that they charge a maintenance fee each month (average $100 a month). This may include some basic marketing and content that might be the right thing for you if you can afford it and have little time to invest.
If you have few technical inclinations and no desire to cultivate the skills, we can go the almost free way. We could build a website on a blogging platform. All we need there is hosting and a domain name which really are very inexpensive. You want to do some research on hosting though, as far as reliability and security, as the host is really what keeps your website running and displayed online where potential customers can see it.
The blogging platforms usually have a number of free themes you can choose from. You may start to customize it for your purposes. (Note that not all themes can be changed so pick one that can be if that is what you want).
If you can’t even afford almost free, there is a blogging platform where you don’t even need a domain or host. The drawback is that the design options are limited, and you will have a sub-domain which is not as professional as a top-level domain. In fact it screams ‘I am a flat-broke newbie’. No big deal everybody had to start somewhere, but it may turn a few ‘savvy’ individuals away.
Being home alone whether you have a home business or not, there are some things that may be true either way. Being home is wonderful but it can be lonely if you are more of a ‘people person’. You can get used to it though. There are ways within reason that you can be happy, for example making dates with friends on a regular basis to have lunch, dinner, etc.
Even texting on your phone, using an online chat client or social network, one of the best things about working alone from home online is when you realize there are hundreds of people out there. In many cases they have much more in common with you than the people at your job. You are really not alone.
You really do need to take regular ‘breathers’ to get out of the house periodically (and regularly). Don’t wake up one day and realize you are getting depressed or ‘stir crazy’ from staying alone too much. Don’t turn your home business into another rut like your job.’ Be sure you still get lots of rest, fresh air and exercise. Particularly if you work both outside and in your home, you may not feel like you have time. Make Time. If you fall apart exhausted or to the point of illness, who will run everything?
If you do enjoy staying home, do something productive even on a ‘hobby’ basis. You can have a great time and improve your fortunes if you make your home generate money to help with your living expenses. In several ways you can improve your atmosphere just by keeping busy and doing something productive. Your ‘hobby home business’ can be a learning tool that might eventually develop into a money making business.
You may have to start at organizing your space to make room for a home office or workshop. This will not only give you a feeling of ‘space’ where you can breathe and think clearly, it can be an exercise that you do each day, one room top to bottom until the whole house is clear.
Don’t forget not to hoard things. If you see things you haven’t seen in years, that means you don’t need them. Start a few piles; one to donate to any number of places for people that really need things; and one for the garbage. Once your atmosphere has been cleared and you are breathing better, you can think clearer. At this point start a few lists of things that interest you and that you like to do. Do some research on how you could do these things at home and make some extra money.
The recipe for success when building a home business is first finding one! We need to find the right ingredients and instructions. Obviously it’s pretty important to follow the directions to the best of your ability. Learn a few basics before you try to do things on your own. It is probably not the right time to do things your way if you have never built a business before.
When you have learned some of the basics and have applied them to see how they work, then you can get creative and do things your way so that you will stand out, etc. If you don’t have any experience in the field however, you may waste resources (time and money) doing it your way when you are only guessing. It wouldn’t take that much time or effort to just learn a few facts.
Find some important expert advice and at least consider that they may be able to show you something you don’t already know. It is great to be a ‘non-conformist’ and to be creative, but there should be some foundation to start from. It may also help you if you have information that includes a ‘track record’ (statistics).
Starting a home business is not really like for instance baking a cake. With cake, if you don’t follow the recipe as far as the quantity of ingredients or baking time, you might end up with a lopsided lump that may even be inedible. With cake there is a right way and a wrong way. You do have more leeway with a business start-up to be creative as long as you have some valid frame of reference.
Above all else, what you don’t want to do is to find reasons to procrastinate or to waste time ‘reinventing the wheel’. If things require more technical expertise than what you possess at this point, don’t worry too much. You can learn what are actually very simple instructions, usually as you go along. Basic technical information will also begin to make more sense to you if you want it to.
Things will look very different to you in the near future, with a little experience and information under your belt. You will be more able to navigate and much of the stress will subside. Remember you do not need a degree in computer science or to be a programmer to learn how to function with your own business – eventually. Unless you actually want to have a technical business, there is really not that much you will need to know that is technical. At the same time though, you shouldn’t run away from it. Learn all you can.
An important ingredient for just about anything we do is Mindset. It allows us to have the ability to start anything, or maintain and succeed with anything. The best Mindset you can have in the beginning or the end is an open-minded willingness to learn (humility). Some things you can do at start up, and others will take time and experience to master. Don’t get in a rush which may only discourage you.
