Just the other day I was complimenting the owner of a site for which I work by telling her that she has quite the entrepreneurial spirit. Business owners cannot be successful without the right opportunity. That may seem like a common sense statement, but think about how many business owners are seeking out the wrong opportunities, often without knowing it. Sometimes it’s easy to look at someone else’s ideas and realize the flaws. Such is life. One day I was walking out of the library, and I noticed an old home, which used to be a restaurant and was not on the main street, was now a tanning salon. Is that tanning salon going to make it in the long run?

Absolutely not. You would think that even the owners of the tanning salon would know that, but for some reason, they have set up shop. That’s not to say that we should judge other people’s businesses. We make enough mistakes of our own, and at the same time, you never know what is going to happen. Maybe the person that owns that tanning salon will start to grow the business in other ways. It is after all located adjacent to a brand new library that takes in a lot of traffic.

We have established that opportunity must be in place, and then in steps the entrepreneurial spirit. Successful business people are driven, motivated, and they are leaders. Yet what is a leader anyway? A true leader is always going to serve the public. You can’t build a business only thinking about yourself. Businesses serve other people.

It’s easy to get the wrong idea about business success when you look at some of the large corporations. Along the road of success, there are people high up that sometimes forget what it’s like where they came from. Not everyone puts the best business practices in motion, and big money sometimes changes people.

Yet from the bottom up, small business owners work hard, long hours. They are always thinking outside the box, coming up with creative ways to grow their business. Business owners must be effective communicators, and they must have a thick skin. Business owners, no matter the niche, have to deal with customers, clients and all kinds of people on different levels.

Successful businesspeople also know how to work off of a strict budget. They do not overspend because they know every dollar is hard-earned. They know how to save money, and they know how to spend money to make money. They know marketing, and they continue to learn about the industry in which they operate, including the competition. They strive to do the best work on a daily basis, and they always put emergency funds away for the unexpected. Successful business owners carry themselves as such, and that means confidence is part of the bargain, too. Yet humility always wins.
