How To Make Your Website SSL Secure

Making your site SSL secure is going to be an absolute must, if you don’t want to lose all your traffic. All major browsers will start displaying messages warning users that they are about to access an unsecured website that might steal their private data. This article shows you how to make your site SSL secure in a few easy steps.

The first thing to do is to obtain your SSL secure certificate. There are many providers of such certificates. Some of them are free to use. If you don’t want to pay for a premium SSL certificate, you can safely go for a free one. Let’s Encrypt is one of the most popular providers.

In order to obtain your SSL certificate from Let’s Encrypt, you have to log into your cPanel and search for the corresponding menu item. Most hosting providers have included this option in their services, in order to help their clients secure their websites without needing any special IT skills. If you can’t work your way around your cPanel dashboard, you can open a ticket with your hosting provider or call their customer support department. You’ll get step by step guidance, so you’ll get your certificate in no time.

Once you have your certificate, your website will work in both variants, with https:// and with http://. This is good, but you need to ensure the non-secure pages are automatically redirected to their secure versions. This is easy to do by adding a few lines of code to your .htaccess file. You can find this code by searching the web, as many IT bloggers have written about this issue multiple times. Alternatively, you can contact your hosting provider to ask for help. They will do everything needed to make your site SSL secure. However, you’ll need to make sure that all internal links and images within your site are also secure.

If your website runs on WordPress, you can use a plugin to make all elements of all pages secure. However, you should keep in mind that this plugin will only be effective if you have your SSL certificate, whether from Let’s Encrypt or from any other provider of your choice. Before installing any plugin, make time to read the user reviews and the instructions for activation, as they may prove to be useful later on. Always choose plugins with high ratings and with a big number of positive reviews. Furthermore, check whether the plugin you want to install has been tested with your current version of WordPress. If you want to stay on the safe side, make a backup copy of your website and store it in a secure place before installing any new plugin. Like this, you’ll be able to revert to the last working configuration of your site, should anything occur during the installation.

This is the method to make your website SSL secure. Once you have it up and running, you won’t need to do anything else. These security certificates get automatically renewed by the provider.

What To Know About The Law On Email

If you want to send emails to your existing customers or your potential customers, you need to know the law regarding this. There are 2 laws that you need to be aware of and they are CAN-SPAM and GDPR. CAN-SPAM is the American legislation that governs emails in particular while GDPR is the data protection regulation which has been brought in by the European Union.

What To Know About CAN-SPAM

As CAN-SPAM is the one that only regulates emails, you need to be aware of this. The CAN-SPAM Act bill was signed into law in the United States in 2003 and was updated on 2008. This was done to stop the onslaught of spam that was landing in everyone’s email inbox.

The law focuses primarily on transparency and covers all commercial emails which are sent to people within the US or from US-based companies. If you are not based in the US, but send emails to US-based customers or use a US-based email service, you will need to adhere to CAN-SPAM. To ensure that you are adhering to the law, you need to consider a few things.

You will need to tell your readers where the email is coming from and cannot cloak your sending email. You will also have to be honest in your subject line. This means that you cannot tell someone that they have won something in the subject line of an email promoting your new product line. You also have to provide a physical address in your email to show that you have a credible business.

What To Know About GDPR

When GDPR came into effect, a lot of people rushed to ensure that their disclaimers and cookie practices were in line with this. However, there is more to GDPR than disclaimers and it will impact the sending of emails from your business. The primary impact point will be the way that people sign up for your emails.

To be in line with GDPR, the customer will actively need to confirm their consent to receiving emails. This could include a clear opt-in or ticking an unchecked opt-in box. Pre-checked boxes that use inaction as a form of consent will not be valid under GDPR and will cause a breach of this law.

Under GDPR, you will also need to keep your consent requests separate to your terms and conditions. In the past, consent for marketing emails was often hidden in the terms and conditions which most people do not take the time to read. The law also states that you need to make it easy for people to withdraw their consent and stop receiving the emails.

It is important to note that GDPR affects any emails that you will be sending to citizens of the European Union. If you do not have any communication with people in the EU, GDPR will not actually affect you. You can also block your website to people in this geographic location if you are not yet ready to comply with GDPR.

Things You Should Know About Search Engines

Search engines basically allow you to search the internet for whatever you’re looking for. So, for example, if you’re looking for “how to tie a perfect knot”, then you simply type that search term into a search engine like Google and the results should bring up website URLs that answer that question. Whenever you do a search, you will get hundreds if not thousands of results. However, most people only click on the first couple of links. Therefore, the sites at the top of the search engines get the most traffic. As a result, if you have a website, then you should aim to to be at the top of the search engines for your keywords if you want a lot of traffic.

animated-motor-sports-image-0036

Now, why should you want so much traffic? Well, if you have a business or have a website that is selling products and services, more traffic means more customers. Of course, how many visitors you convert into customers is a subject for another article since this will be about conversion rate optimization. However, you need to have real people landing on your site in order for you to make sales. In order for your website to be placed at the top of the search engines, you need to do something called search engine optimization or SEO. This basically optimizes your website so that it ranks in the top three results. We will now take a quick overview of how to do SEO.

The first thing you need to do is on-page SEO which is where you focus on optimizing aspects of your website. This means choosing the right keywords, creating your site’s architecture, building out content, interlinking, optimizing for your keywords etc. The first thing you will need to do is choose the right keywords. You should look for long tail keywords that have enough search volume that are not too competitive. If you choose a keyword that is too competitive, then you will have a hard time ranking, so matter how much SEO you do. Also, if you choose a keyword that doesn’t have much search volume, then when you rank number one, you won’t get much if any traffic. There are lots of tools that can be used to find keywords such as Ahrefs, SemRush, Long Tail Pro etc.

It is best to get at least a handful of keywords for each page and then sprinkle those keywords in your URL, title, headers, body etc. You should take special care not to over optimize for your keywords since it will attract an over optimization penalty. You should also be careful not to interlink with too many optimized anchor texts, since this will also get your site penalized.

Lastly, you need to do off-page SEO which is building backlinks. This includes links from PBNs, guest posts, blog comments, paid links etc. You should strive to get links from sites that are related to your niche and have a good domain authority.

In closing, we have just looked at what you need to know about search engines and how to do SEO. The information in this article is just a starter, so be sure to continue researching to learn more.
