I see new marketers all the time who have a goal of a $100,000 per year or even a million dollars per year. And how are they getting their traffic? They’re happily submitting articles, writing blog posts and commenting in forums and blogs.
Now, if your goal is to earn an extra $1,000-$2,000 per month, then these methods are great. But if you want to earn far more, you’ll want to change the way you get traffic.
No one that I know of is making large sums of money using only these methods. Instead, they are doing either SEO, PPC, Facebook Ads, or creating their own products and affiliate programs.
Or they have a HUGE list. But how do you get a huge, responsive list? Generally by using SEO, PPC or some kind of advertising.
So the real questions to think about when it comes to not only traffic but also any issue regarding your business is:
A) What is your goal?
B) Is what you’re doing going to get you to that goal this year?
And if it’s not – look for another method.
I will say there are of course always exceptions to the rule. If you’re really good at a particular marketing strategy like blogging, or direct sales using Facebook chats and other social networking engagements AND you sell products that can pay you high commissions, it IS possible to build a 6 or 7 figure income with free marketing.
But for the average person, paid advertising can be a faster path to the higher income tiers. Either way, choose a strategy that works within your current budget and commit to learning how to execute that strategy at the highest level possible if you are in the online marketing game to make a serious and life-changing income.
There are many affiliate programs that offer some level of training with regard to promoting a business online. When you join, the company will assign your affiliate ID and give you a link to your own sales page so that you can actually start advertising on day one. You can start earning commissions while you are still learning how! However, it is probably a good idea to read over the documentation on the site. This will give you ideas on what to say in your blog, ads, etc..
There are some that feel ‘safer’ just to keep learning endlessly because they don’t feel that they can actually do anything yet. This is a waste of time. Often these folks suffer from what can be referred to as ‘paralysis by analysis. They hide behind the learning and never believe they know enough to start taking action. They waste months and sometimes even years thinking that they don’t know anything.
Affiliate marketing is very attractive, especially as a first effort to start a home business online. This is so in large part because they provide everything you need to get started on the first day. There is really no reason to wait. If they don’t have official training, then read all the FAQs and other documentation in your member back office.
An affiliate program has the product ready for you. They allow you to earn money from their intellectual property. This has taken them possibly years and many dollars to develop. There are also costs they pay associated with running the membership program. This is why when you become a member you will eventually pay a monthly membership fee. What you get in return is far and above more than you will pay. If you were to pay for a website, a web page, maintaining software, hosting, etc. you will realize how much time and money you save by affiliating yourself with an existing company.
It can take a while where you are learning and advertising, and it may be unlikely as a beginner that you will make sales the first day. It is possible though so why not dive right in as it will probably take some time to see substantial results.
However usually when you see statements that you can make money today it assumes you have a list of existing customers or prospects -or at the very least marketing experience.
Unfortunately there is no magic that will create sales. You have to promote your links constantly over time to build momentum. What they are actually saying is that it is possible to START the process to earn money; meaning at the least to become a member and start the process of developing your business today.
It’s pretty important to follow the directions with most things. One example is if you were baking a cake and the recipe called for “bake at 350 for 1 hour”. It would be a real mess if you decided 30 minutes was long enough. Nothing like what you would expect the cake to look like. It would likely be gooey and flat or at least lopsided.
The same principle should be applied to starting a home business online. No matter which strategies you employ it’s going to take time. This is the case even if you have ‘autopilot’ or automation. Whether or not you use paid advertising, it will take some time.
If you have foolishly gambled with your rent money or otherwise over-extended yourself financially, it is understandable you would now be in a rush to recover. If you are paying membership fees and have other monthly costs then you are anxious to see a return on your investment. This is one element that causes people to rush. Understandable but still not right.
It is still going to take as much time as it takes to start seeing tangible results. Nobody can say when it will start to produce income. Of course income is very much dependent on how much time and effort you are willing to invest regardless of spending money to promote your business or not.
Other factors that we do not control are also relevant, such as the economy, world affairs and even the weather. The employment picture is also relevant and this one can manifest itself either way; when people fear that they may be losing their job or have already lost one, some will feel compelled to save every last dime; others will start to build something on their own using whatever money they have.
Another factor is what people will do when they see your ads or emails. Most will do nothing except read. So you need more time to reach those that are interested enough to take action when they see your opportunity. There are many existing online businesses looking to expand their earnings potential with new programs.
There are always many new start-ups and people exploring the possibilities to make money online. So you are not alone. The point is that only a small percentage of the world population is serious about starting a business on the Internet. It is like finding the ‘needle in the haystack’ to find interested people. So remember this if you feel discouraged if you send 100s of emails and leads and other ads with no response. This does not mean stop.. It means keep trying.
The other really disastrous bad idea for a business start-up is to sit back and wait for the response you are expecting. Never just put out a bunch of ads and then kick back and wait for the money. You need to keep trying aggressively all the time. This is how you build and sustain momentum. Do not become complacent or ever feel you have done enough to promote your business and deserve a rest. You will never have done enough unless you are raking in millions.
